Last Saturday, our HF discussion focused on Matthew 16:13-28. We kicked off the session with a small game where members in their assigned groups chose one of three items available: a Rock, a bunch of Keys and a Cross. It may seem like a surprising range of items, but each was inspired by the context of the bible verses.
v18.ROCK – Everyone agreed that the ROCK was an analogy for Jesus, who is the solid foundation of the Church. It could also refer to Peter, his leadership or faith built on Jesus who is the key cornerstone of our lives.
v19. KEYS — This seemed to be a reference to Jesus as the ultimate KEY that provides “keys”- vital capabilities to serve the Church. The keys could include wisdom, help, power to pray for healing and forgiveness of sins, to bind and cast demons, and for pre-believers find their salvation and entry to the Heavenly Kingdom.
v24. CROSS – Lastly, we agreed that the cross was related to the act of crucifixion, which was the cruellest form of Roman capital punishment. To receive such punishment meant the end of life. Hence, taking up the cross to follow Christ signifies a intentional, bold and ultimate decision of complete surrender to Christ, living a life in and for Christ. This was a decision clearly demonstrated by apostle Paul’s lifestyle (Philippians 1:21).
Peter’s confession revealed that Jesus was not just any special human. Jesus was the beloved Messiah, son of the living God. In v22, Peter, in his human flesh and condition, rebuked him and Jesus wisely turned it into teachable moment. Jesus ‘s response clearly warns that whenever we choose to leave God out of the picture, we are prone to becoming stumbling blocks. Moreover, Jesus does not need to be protected or guided through our manmade logic or emotions. He simply wants us to love, follow and obey the Father.
God ‘s plans may seem mysterious and even uncomprehensible at times. It is an act of faith and obedience to fully trust that He is in control because He is the great “I AM”.
Who is Jesus to you?
To my HF members, Jesus to them is a variety of analogies. Some call Him the “The Breath”- without him, there is no living. Others shared that he is “ My Priority”- at home , at the market place, at all times; “ Safe Space” – where one can be at ease and be authentic in our communication with him; “Sustainer” – in all aspects and at all times, we trust in Him to guide, sustain, bless and protect; “We are his Co-heirs”- Romans 8:17 and our salvation is our greatest gift from him to us;“ Best Friend” – no judgement, always supportive and the only one to run to;“ my Everything” – The one whom I abide in, with total trust and obedience and finally, the acronym that young people use G.O.A.T (to mean Greatest of All Time).
In certain seasons of our lives, when asked who and how Jesus truly means to us, our convictions may not come through so easily. It is critical to bring Jesus to mind daily, and to always fix our eyes on Him, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). We should remain just like the cloud of witnesses (Hebrews 12:1) to pray, seek, trust and become encouraged, always ready to rise up to answer His call.
Signing off,
Susan and Jenny (Diakonia)
